Something of a breather episode here while the guys do a little processing. We get a little more insight into Takaaki via flashback, but most of the episode is Hiro trying to a) figure out somewhere to go where he’ll be more likely to encounter Takaaki, and b) make sure that when they do meet, he’ll have his own affairs lined up and ready to be talked out. Naturally, the first part integrates the episode’s obligatory dose of fishing tech, which is part of the charm of watching a show like this. Also naturally, most of the details relevant to the second part are left out so they can be deployed to maximum effect in the finale.

Apropos of nothing, something I never had a good opportunity to mention is that I can’t look at Ice (who continues to be present in this episode) without seeing a mashup of several of the characters from Muromi-san on the Shore. It’s not really a fishing anime, although it is mostly about a guy being harassed by mythical weirdos while he goes fishing, so… there’s a little overlap – enough that I feel comfortable believing that Angler’s character designer, Taniguchi Hiromi, has carried a piece of that strange little show with him, consciously or not, ever since he worked on an episode of it over a decade ago, when he was much lower on the totem pole.
