Near as I can figure, the “Shoukoku Sea Fishing Facility” that the gang drives out to for this episode is based on the actual Daikoku Sea Fishing Facility (Park?) on the Yokohama coast. Compare the satellite photos of your choice to this establishing shot:

I’d like to imagine that the staff had fun making this episode, due to the running gag where it uses the same style of narration and overly dramatic background music as whatever television program Fish Dreamer is referencing. I found the whole bit very amusing, even if I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen the like in its natural habitat – especially when Hiro starts to blur the line by interacting with the narration. Perhaps the main gag of the episode is the reveal that this is at least partially taking place in his imagination, even though the narrator is clearly speaking from a position of greater experience. Who among us hasn’t played pretend for some fixation or other, though? Life’s too short to worry about looking childish in public all the time – Hiro’s life more so than most.

Other than that, it’s pretty much your standard slice of life episode – learn a little more about a specific class of fish and what tried-and-true techniques exist to attract them; shed a little light on one of the supporting characters; everybody gets together for dinner.
